Between Creating and Collecting. Exploring Duisburg’s Inner Harbour.
Traces of the Middle Ages, remains of industrial history, postmodern architecture and recreation for local residents all come together in the collaged cityscape of the Duisburg Inner Harbour. That this little brother of Duisburg’s main inland harbour was once Europe’s largest terminal for storing and handling grain is hardly visible today. The harbour canal was redeveloped in the 1990s into a residential and recreation area according to a masterplan designed by the architect Sir Norman Foster in conjunction with the International Building Exhibition Emscher Park, or IBA Emscher Park for short. Also, many institutions focusing on history are located within this relatively small area, including the City Archive Duisburg, the Centre for Commemorative Culture, the State Archive of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Garden of Memories by artist Dani Karavan.
This exhibition presents primarily new sculptural, conceptual, performative, and audio-visual works by international artists who provide a contemporary perspective on the inner harbour while exploring processes of creating, overlaying and failure.
A production by Urbane Künste Ruhr for the Ruhrtriennale. The contributions by Arhun Aksakal, Marlin de Haan, Paula Pedraza, Franziska Pierwoss & Jonas Leifert, Ramona Schacht & Luca Bublik, Anna R. Winder were developed as part of the programme Zu Gast bei Urbane Künste Ruhr.

Workshops
Die Halde / The Dump
Digging Workshops with artist Stella Flatten
In the middle of Duisburg's Inner Harbour, artist Stella Flatten's project Die Halde / The Dump invites people aged 3 and over to take part in a collaborative process of digging in an excavation site created for the exhibition. The physical activity of digging – as an act of participation and a tool for reflection – puts us in touch with ourselves, our history, memory and immediate surroundings. In the workshops with the artist, we embark on a joint search for buried meanings and enter into a dialogue about how the hidden can be made visible. Objects will also be collected during the exhibition and buried together in a time capsule at the end of the project.

Parkour
With their movements, parkour athletes, also known as traceurs, pursue the goal of getting from one point to another as effectively and elegantly as possible. They use various acrobatic exercises and movements that focus on dynamics, technique and safety. This results in an almost artistic form of locomotion that offers challenges and successes for every age and physical condition. In the workshops, we offer children and young people of different ages and with different physical abilities the opportunity to try out their skills under the guidance of experienced parkour trainers.
