Artists at Work
Artists between silver screen and stage.
The film series Artists at Work showcases the versatility of Ruhrtriennale artists. Every Tuesday in the Turbinenhalle we present a cinematic work featuring a festival artist. The artistic team of the Ruhrtriennale opens each evening with an in-person interview with each guest. This places the Spotlight on the people behind these great works, who share what drives and motivates them across mediums.

The film Sisters with Transistors tells the stories of groundbreaking female artists in electronic music. Gregory, who interprets Carlos’ music with his ensemble in the Erased Music series, will also give insights into his work with electronic music. An evening dedicated to innovative sounds, pioneering female artists and the unbridled power of electronic music.
Tue 2 September: “Robyn Orlin, de Johannesburg au Palais Garnier” with Robyn Orlin
This documentary film follows director Robyn Orlin as she works at the Opéra Garnier, where she premiered L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato in 2007. Providing deep insights into her working methods, the film covers everything from the initial planning to the dress rehearsal. Humorous and thought-provoking, it illustrates how Orlin combines various opposites in her work: improvisation and rules, discipline and fun, and freedom and hierarchy.
For Robyn Orlin, dance is not just about movement, but also about the powerful connection between ideas, life and movement. Rather than focusing solely on dance scenes, the film highlights the quiet, often poetic, moments and conversations that breathe life into the creative process.
Anita van Dolen, dance curator of the Ruhrtriennale, opens the evening with a conversation with Robyn Orlin about her sources of inspiration and how she integrates work and life into her pieces. This year, the South African choreographer is a guest at the Ruhrtriennale with her piece ...how in salt desert is it possible to blossom....
Tue 9. September: “SOUL CHAIN: Sharon Eyal and the Ballet of the Beats” with Sharon Eyal
This documentary film provides fascinating insights into the creative process behind the dance piece SOUL CHAIN:, showcasing the work of acclaimed choreographer Sharon Eyal. It shows how she develops her choreography and how her dancers experience the precise yet free-flowing movements. The piece is captured through sensitive camerawork, giving the audience the feeling of being part of the choreography themselves.
In the run-up to the performance, Sharon Eyal discusses her artistic vision, the creative process, and the tension between form and freedom, group and individual with Anita van Dolen, the dance curator of the Ruhrtriennale. This year, Eyal's new piece Delay the Sadness, will celebrate its world premiere at the Ruhrtriennale.
