Ruhrtriennale 2024 takes place Aug 16 – Sept 15!

27. January 2024

The time frame of the Ruhrtriennale 2024 has been confirmed: The festival begins on Friday, August 16 and ends on September 15. Over the course of four and a half weeks, the former industrial monuments in the Ruhr metropolis will host interdisciplinary productions of theatre, music theatre, concerts, dance, performance, installation, literature and dialogue.

The new artistic director of the Ruhrtriennale 2024–2026 is Ivo Van Hove. The internationally renowned theatre and opera director has mainly staged productions in New York, London and Paris in recent years. Until fall 2023, he was director of the Internationaal Theater Amsterdam (ITA), formerly Toneelgroep Amsterdam. Ivo Van Hove has already been a guest at the Ruhrtriennale several times: with stage adaptations of the novels by Louis Couperus "The Hidden Force", " Old People and the Things that Pass" and "Small Souls" (2015–2017) as well as with "Rocco and His Brothers" by Luchino Visconti (2008) and "Teorema" based on Pier Paolo Pasolini (2009).

Ivo Van Hove's motto for the festival is "Longing for tomorrow". In an interview
the Belgian theatre director reveals what lies behind the motto, what he appreciates most about the Ruhr area and why his return to the Ruhrtriennale feels like a "return to his roots".
