Marina Abramović: Balkan Erotic Epic at Ruhrtriennale 2026

In 2026, Ruhrtriennale presents Balkan Erotic Epic, a daring large-scale performance conceived and directed by Marina Abramović, the world’s most influential performance artist. Tickets go on sale on 9 December, 10 am.

From 3 – 9 September 2026, a powerful ritual unfolds in the Kraftzentrale at Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord. Abramović, using her very personal, unique and direct performance language, explores eroticism, spirituality and ritual in Balkan Erotic Epic. In 13 scenes, performance, dance and traditional throat singing fuse, paving the way for Abramović's ‘most ambitious work’, which the audience can experience in a four-hour immersive journey. 

“In the past, for so many ancient cultures, procreation and life itself were based on numerous ceremonies aimed at creating an understanding of our existence”, says Abramović. “By rediscovering this forgotten past, I would like to create a new understanding and context for the public today.”
