Artists At Work: Ganz nah an den Künstler:innen der Ruhrtriennale
4.7.2025This year, the Ruhrtriennale offers many opportunities to come into contact with the festival's artists: Every Tuesday evening, Artistic Director Ivo Van Hove and his team invite Ruhrtriennale artists to the Turbinenhalle for a personal discussion in the Artists at Work series . Following the talks, films are shown in the special atmosphere of the former industrial hall, providing further insights into the work and lives of the artists.
On 26 August, Ivo Van Hove welcomes Will Gregory, keyboardist, producer and composer of the music duo Goldfrapp, who will be interpreting the music of Wendy Carlos with the Will Gregory Moog Ensemble as part of the Erased Music series. Will Gregory talks about his work with electronic music and the influence of Wendy Carlos on music history. The talk will be followed by a screening of the film Sisters with Transistors (English with German subtitles, 85 min.), which tells the stories of pioneering female electronic music artists.
South African dancer and choreographer Robyn Orlin (...how in salts desert is it possible to blossom...) will be a guest of Anita van Dolen on 2 September and talk to the dance curator about what inspires her and how she combines work and life in her pieces. The documentary Robyn Orlin, de Johannesburg au Palais Garnier (English with German subtitles, 90 min.) accompanies the choreographer during a work for the Paris Opera, provides insights into her working methods and also shows the quiet moments and conversations that nourish the creative power of Orlin's productions.
On 9 September, Israeli choreographer Sharon Eyal will talk to Anita van Dolen about the creation process of her production Delay the Sadness, which will celebrate its world premiere at the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum on 12 September. The documentary film SOUL CHAIN: Sharon Eyal and the Ballet of the Beats (English with German subtitles, 45 min.) about the creation of the dance piece of the same name follows the creative process of the celebrated choreographer and shows how she and her dancers develop the precise yet free movements that are so typical of the ensemble. The camera follows the action on stage so closely that you have the feeling of being part of the choreography yourself.
On the last evening of the Artists at Work series, the American avant-garde composer David Lang will be our guest on 16 September, shortly before the concert premiere of his new work before and after nature with CHORWERK RUHR. He will talk to programme director Krystian Lada about his artistic development and his philosophy as a composer, among other things. The documentary New York Composers: Searching for a New Music (English with German subtitles, 58 min.) takes viewers into the vibrant centre of the New York music scene of the late 1990s and provides intimate insights into the world of influential composers such as David Lang, Philip Glass and Julia Wolfe, who ushered in a new era with their innovative music.
