Four things that make Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord unique
Did you know?
1. From steelworks to cultural centre
The Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord is an impressive example of the transformation from industrial to cultural landscape. Instead of blazing blast furnaces, visitors can now experience light art, theatre and concerts on the former site of the Meiderich steelworks, which was shut down in 1985. The Ruhrtriennale uses three of these monumental spaces — the Kraftzentrale, Gießhalle and Gebläsehalle — to create unique stage experiences where past and present merge.
2. The Kraftzentrale was almost demolished
Today, the Kraftzentrale is one of the most impressive industrial heritage venues in Europe, but that almost didn't happen. After the smelting works closed, the building was on the brink of demolition until the city of Duisburg decided to save it in 1996. Since then, it has developed into one of the area's most important event venues and has become home to major Ruhrtriennale productions.
3. Unrivalled leisure activities
The diving gasometer in the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord offers an incomparable underwater landscape, including an artificial reef, the wreck of a motor yacht and the fuselage of an aeroplane. Measuring 45 metres in diameter and 13 metres in depth, it is the largest indoor diving facility in Europe.
Those who prefer heights can tackle a former foundry hall and a disused blast furnace on the high ropes course, which features swaying bridges and adventurous rope constructions. The course culminates at a height of around 50 metres, offering a magnificent view of the Ruhr area!
4. Apen-air feeling with industrial charm
The Gießhalle is no ordinary hall – it is a semi-open outdoor venue in which the roof can be partially opened. This creates a unique atmosphere that is particularly impressive for concerts. While it is often used as a spectacular open-air cinema hall, it is also the venue for legendary concerts for the Ruhrtriennale – from Suzanne Vega to Iggy Pop. When the sounds combine with the open industrial backdrop and the sky above Duisburg, every event becomes an unforgettable experience.
