Maschinenhalle Zweckel
About Maschinenhalle Zweckel
Gladbeck is a town characterised by mining. Even today you can still see winding towers, green slag heaps and colliery housing estates. One of the town's most beautiful landmarks is the moated castle of Wittringen with its extensive park. The listed building also houses the Gladbeck City Museum with its extensive collections.
The imposing machine hall of the former Zweckel colliery in Gladbeck was built in 1909. It was the colliery's ‘electrical centre’ and housed compressors, generators and converters to produce compressed air and electrical energy. The colliery buildings as well as the chimneys and cooling towers that once characterised the site as a workplace have disappeared, emphasising the castle-like character of the machine hall. Only the steel headframes from 1911/12, which protrude above the hall, are a direct reminder of the mining era.
