After the short story by James Joyce with text passages from Ulysses and Finnigans Wake

This séance is aware of the liveliness of the dead, of the power that the absent have over those present. In Martin Zehetgruber’s bourgeois burial chamber, Barbara Frey creates images in masterful chiaroscuro. Relying fully on the sound and rhythm of the language, the production opens up all the many nuances of the legendary Irish writer James Joyce’s world.

›Frey’s art is to give space to things that resist explanation and for which there is no terminology. With her farewell production (from Schauspielhaus Zürich, ed.) she bequeaths the audience something whose genre has yet to be invented. It is the language of James Joyce that provides the material for an oratorio and a summoning of the dead. Frey’s theatre was and is communication with a third entity that is reliably present, with what is unnamable, perhaps transcendent – a currency in any event that is beyond the usual.‹  (Neue Zürcher Zeitung)
