Barbara Hannigan sings the role of Mélisande in Krzysztof Warlikowski’s new production of Debussy’s opera ‘Pelléas et Mélisande’ this summer. The Canadian star soprano and the celebrated Polish theatre and opera director have worked together on numerous occasions in the past: on ‘Lulu’ and ‘Don Giovanni’ in Brussels and ‘La Voix humaine’ in Paris. In April 2016 Warlikowski marked the opening of Nowy Theatre in Warsaw with a production of ‘Socrate’ (Socrates) by Erik Satie, performed by Barbara Hannigan and Reinbert de Leeuw. The Dutch pianist and conductor is regarded as the leading Satie specialist of our time. In the last two years he has performed at the Ruhrtriennale in an unforgettable Liszt concert at Zeche Carl in Essen and in the music theatre work ‘Die Fremden’ in Marl.
On 20th August Warlikowski, Hannigan and de Leeuw will present a single performance of ‘Socrate’ at the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum. The audience will be seated within the stage design for ‘Pelléas et Mélisande’. This represents a unique opportunity to discover one of the most original compositions of the 20th century in a new and different setting.
