Christoph Marthaler


Christoph Marthaler is Artiste associé of Ruhrtriennale 2018 to 2020 within the artistic direction of Stefanie Carp. In 2019 the Ruhrtriennale opened with Marthalers "Nach den letzten Tagen. Ein Spätabend" and convinced musically and lyrically in the Audimax of the Ruhr University. In 2018, he presented "Universe, Incomplete" in Jahrhunderthalle Bochum and highlighted historical implications of Ives’ composition, the venue and questions on society. His innovative theatrical vocabulary became established in Germany with the 1993 productions "Murx den Europäer! Murx ihn! Murx ihn! Murx ihn! Murx ihn ab!" and Goethes "Faust Wurzel aus 1+2". From 2000 to 2004 Marthaler was Artistic Director of Schauspielhaus Zürich, which was voted “Theatre of the Year” twice during this period. More than 15 of his productions have been invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen. He has also been awarded numerous prizes including most recently the International Ibsen Award 2018, the Golden Lion at the Biennale de Venezia in 2015 and the Zurich Art Prize 2017. His productions have been presented at leading festivals around the globe. Marthaler has also directed at several opera houses including in Paris, Zürich, Madrid and the Salzburg Festival.
