Ulrich Fussenegger

Musical direction

Uli Fussenegger was a dramaturg at Klangforum Wien for more than 20 years. Since 2018 he has been head of the Contemporary Music department at the Basel Academy of Music. He studied double bass with Franz Dunkler and Ludwig Streicher in Vienna. After several years of freelance concert work in the field of early music playing original instruments (Freiburger Barockorchester, Concentus Musicus Vienna), Fussenegger specialised in contemporary music and became a member of Klangforum Wien in 1987. Many years of collaboration with the composers Georges Aperghis, Beat Furrer, Bernhard Lang, Matthias Pintscher and Alberto Posadas led to countless solo works for double bass that Uli Fussenegger premiered. In addition to his international concert work as a double bass player, Fussenegger works as a composer and improviser. To date his work is documented in over 400 CD and DVD productions. Fussenegger was also active as a curator and he collaborated intensively with the director Christoph Marthaler, among others. Uli Fussenegger has taught music at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts since 2009, at the ensemble academy “Impuls” in Graz since 1999 and at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music since 2002. He has also been an instrumental coach at the Lucerne Festival Academy since 2017.
