‘New Worlds’

The Ruhrtriennale in collaboration with Ringlokschuppen Ruhr invites three companies of young theatremakers to develop their own theatre projects within a 2017 masterclass and to present them as part of the Ruhrtriennale programme. Groups may apply who are at the beginning of their professional careers. The Ruhrtriennale wishes to promote emerging theatre artists and to support interdisciplinary working methods.

The aim is to produce a performance (max. 60 minutes) related to the theme ‘New Worlds’. This title is linked to themes explored in the current Ruhrtriennale season. In 2017 the festival looks forwards: it tells stories of the future, change and the search for visions and utopias. What are our feelings about the world of tomorrow? Where is progress taking us? Does paradise await us at the end, or what follows the apocalypse? Such visions and versions of ‘New Worlds’ will provide the subject matter for the masterclass.

We are looking for projects which can be continued during the masterclass and ultimately performed for the public in the spaces of Ringlokschuppen Ruhr (these will be allocated by the selection panel). These projects should be developed further and ultimately given world premieres in their new form over the course of three weeks during the Ruhrtriennale.

Ringlokschuppen Ruhr will provide the project teams with logistical support during the rehearsal period consisting of staff and technical equipment. For all remaining costs each of the three teams will receive a production budget of 5,000 Euro.

The projects will also receive dramaturgical coaching from the teams of the Ruhrtriennale and Ringlokschuppen Ruhr as well as internationally renowned artists.

In addition the participants may attend Ruhrtriennale performances subject to availability. For the three and a half week duration of the masterclass, participants will receive accommodation (in multi-occupancy housing), travel expenses (a one-off payment of no more than 100 Euro per person), per diems for subsistence (full rate 24 Euro per day per person for 23 days, half rate 12 Euro for the two days of arrival and departure). These payments are limited to a maximum of 5 persons per team.

Additional information (Q&A):

Is it only for groups or may individuals also apply?
The masterclass is aimed at groups. Please remember to send detailed CVs of each team member along with letters of recommendation or samples of their work.

Is there an age limit?
No, but the masterclass is aimed at the next generation of theatre artists. Anyone who has been working professionally in the theatre for over five years will not be considered to be in this category.

What are the demands in terms of content?
The projects should focus on the topic ‘New Worlds’. It is also possible to rework projects in the masterclass which have had some previous development provided they fit within the specific theme and ultimately lead to a genuine world premiere. As the Ruhrtriennale is an interdisciplinary arts festival, the masterclass is intended to support working methods which explore the boundaries of music and theatre, of dance and fine art, of drama and installation.

Are the masterclass and the performance two separate projects?
No, the masterclass leads to the public performances.

How will the masterclass work in practice?
You and your team will travel to Mülheim an der Ruhr on 1st September 2017. On the first weekend it is planned for all three selected theatre groups to visit Ruhrtriennale performances together. On 4th September 2017 you will begin further development work on your project in the spaces at Ringlokschuppen Ruhr. Over the next three weeks the dramaturgs of the Ruhrtriennale and Ringlokschuppen Ruhr will continuously work with you on your ideas. In addition external coaches, established theatre makers, will be invited to attend some of your rehearsals and discuss your project with you afterwards. This process leads to the public performances on 23rd and 24th September 2017. Each performance will last a maximum of 60 minutes. The audience will have combined tickets giving them the opportunity to see all three performances in succession. It is planned that you will leave Mülheim on 25th September 2017.

How much time will the workshops take up? Are there specific demands on our time?
The main part of the masterclass consists of normal theatrical rehearsal work. You will develop and rehearse your project, and the dramaturgy of the Ruhrtriennale and Ringlokschuppen Ruhr will work with you consistently to support this. In addition there will be days, probably in the second week, when the external coaches (established theatremakers) will attend rehearsals and discuss them with you. Apart from this, over the three weeks you will have the chance to see some of the performances in the Ruhrtriennale programme, though this is not compulsory.

Do the rehearsals take place in a theatre or a space with technical equipment?
Yes, in spaces belonging to Ringlokschuppen Ruhr.

When will I know whether I have been invited?
It is intended to decide which three project teams have been selected by the end of April 2017.
