Leigh Melrose

Leigh Melrose has carved out a formidable reputation for the performance of new works and dramatic 20th century repertoire. A wonderfully dynamic artist on both the concert and opera platform, Melrose has recently made stunning debuts as Wozzeck with English National Opera and Opern Zurich; Alberich Das Rheingold at Ruhrtriennale Festival; Friedrich Das Liebesverbot and the Traveller Death in Venice, both at Teatro Real; and Stolzius Die Soldaten at Teatro Colon.

His numerous world premieres include Dai Fujikura’s Solaris atTheatre de Champs Elysees, Opéra de Lille and Opéra de Lausanne; Johannes Kalitzke’s Die Besessenen at Theater an der Wien; Elliot Carter’s On Conversing with Paradise at the Aldeburgh Festival; Luca Francesconi's Quartet at Royal Opera House; and Evan in James MacMillan’s The Sacrifice at Welsh National Opera.

In 2016/17 Melrose makes two major role debuts: Ruprecht in a new production of Fiery Angel in Zurich, under the direction of Gianandrea Noseda and Calixto Bieito; and Golaud Pelleas et Mellisande in his return to Ruhrtriennale. At English National Opera he will premiere The Winter’s Tale, a new work by composer-in-residence Ryan Wigglesworth.
