Bochumer Symphoniker

Over the course of its history the orchestra founded in 1919 has secured the reputation as an extraordinarily versatile concert ensemble. On two occasions (for the seasons 1996/1997 and 2004/2005) the Bochumer Symphoniker has won the German Music Publishers’ Association’s much sought-after prize for “Best Concert Programme”.

The BoSy has also made a name for itself internationally: the orchestra has impressed on concert tours to Israel, Austria, Estonia, the Netherlands and the USA as well as with its regular appearances at the international festival of the arts the Ruhrtriennale, notably in the internationally successful production of Zimmermann’s ‘Die Soldaten’, which the Bochumer Symphoniker also presented in New York at the invitation of the Lincoln Center Festival. The Bochumer Symphoniker also played a leading role in numerous projects as part of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010.

The highest musical standards, flexibility and a delight in innovation are qualities the Bochumer Symphoniker has demonstrated in a whole series of crossover projects including collaborating with Sting on his ‘Symphonicities’ tour, appearing on television in the Harald Schmidt Show or performing orchestral concerts of video game soundtracks.

The orchestra has recorded the complete works of German late Romantic composer Jospeh Marx for the British ASV label. The second CD in this series, ‘Orchestral Songs’, was nominated for a Grammy. The recently released recording of Lieder by Mahler and Rihm with the tenor Christoph Prégardien on cpo received top marks from ‘Klassik heute’ and others

During the 2016/2017 season the orchestra is delighted to be able to move into a home of its own for the first time: the Anneliese Brost Musikforum Ruhr. After decades of campaigning for this venue, it marks the fulfilment of a desire for the orchestra to be able to host others and to be able to present its own abilities in an excellent acoustic space.
